Rural Projects hosted our inaugural artist in residence, Martine Kaczynski, in 2007. Kaczynski created the site-specific sculpture, Route 11, a replica of a disused gas station, subsequently staging a solar cinema there. The piece has been used by other RP artists over the years for a cocktail party, acoustic concert, poetry reading, and more. Kaczynski recently refurbished Route 11. The work has become a landmark and an indelible part of the local landscape.

 

RP has been on semi-hiatus since 2019. Summer 2026 we will participate in Upstate Art Weekend to officially reopen Route 11 with an exhibition in the studio of selected preparatory work by Martine for the piece, as well as an artist reception and reactivation of the site with a poetry reading by Miriam Atkin.
